Top Bar Furniture Tips

Choosing bar furniture for your kitchen island bar seating, breakfast bar nook or other area of your home involves considering usage, functionality, comfort, and aesthetics. It is possible to have a marriage of all aspects. That can be easier if you work with an interior design professional, but here are a few tips to get you started, so you’ll have an idea what to expect.

  • Bar Stool Height – If you already have a set bar or counter in place, you’ll want to choose bar stools that leave about a foot between the counter or table and the top of the bar stool seat. You could allow a little less, but don’t go below 9 inches.
  • Height for Full Set – If you are getting a complete set of bar furniture – table and chairs – you can choose what you’ll find the most comfortable and aesthetically pleasing for your purposes. Sizes can range from 24” to 36” with the taller ones often a custom design.
  • Safety Issues – You should keep in mind any physical limitations that might make a higher stool a safety risk, such as for an elderly parent or young children. Swivel bar stools can also be tricky and could result in falls for someone with reduced motor acuity.
  • Comfort – Consider the usage of your bar furniture. Will it just get used a few minutes a day or be used for longer periods such as when entertaining? The longer the seating period, the more important comfort becomes. A stylish round wooden or metal stool looks nice, but sitting on one for long isn’t fun. For ultimate comfort, consider upholstered stools. It’s also more comfortable to be able to lean back, so choose a bar stool with a back for this purpose.
